In this exclusive interview, Xnow opens up about the story behind his name, the emotional depth of his standout single Gbemisoke, and the dreams he’s nurturing for global impact.

- Chidera, your stage name “Xnow” feels distinctive, what’s the inspiration behind choosing it?
“I used to go by Chidex Wizzy, but it didn’t fit. I discovered ‘Snow’ through a kid I babysat who wore a ‘Snow’ shirt. It resonated with my vibe, so I tweaked it to Xnow for uniqueness.”
- You hail from Aba in Abia State. How has growing up in Aba and later moving between Port Harcourt and Lagos, shaped your musical style and vision?
– “Xnow brought out my originality, reminding me of my roots in music.”
- Your music blends Afrobeats with Eastern Nigerian rhythms Can you describe what elements or instruments from your cultural heritage you feel are most important to your sound?
Growing up, we experimented with instruments, especially the flute (Oja). It influenced my sound.
- You have five official releases, including “Kilode”,“Kolos”, “POV”, “Sarah”, and “Gbemisoke.” Which one felt like your breakthrough or turning point—and why?
Gbemisoke is a standout song – I wrote it from the heart, and people connected with it.
- “Gbemisoke” is your last single. What themes or story does it explore, and how does it differ from your previous work?
I wrote ‘Gbemisoke’ during a low point in my life and career. My manager sent me a beat, and I poured out my emotions into it to give this masterpiece.

- How do you usually start writing a song—does it begin with melody, beat, or lyrics?
Melody is key for me; I vibe with it strongly.
- Afro-fusion is broad, how do define reproach within that genre, and what do you bring to it that’s uniquely “Xnow”?
Staying true to my sound and cultural roots; that’s what’s being preached through Xnow.
- Your music seem Purpose-built “transcend borders”. How do you balance making something authentic to your roots while appealing to an international audience?
Good music transcends boundaries; that’s what I’m aiming for in the music industry and making that go further in the diaspora also.

- Are there any cross-cultural collaborations you’re working on or dreaming of, maybe with artists outside Nigeria?
I’m excited about collaborating with talented artists, both locally and internationally, in due time everything would be out of the bag regardless.
- What’s been the biggest obstacle you’ve encountered so far in the industry and how did you overcome it?
No major challenges yet, but I’ll overcome any that come my way with faith and my music.
- As Xnow evolves, what new musical directions or sounds are you excited to explore in future projects?
I’m a fan of Korean sounds – pure and authentic. I’d love to experience real love and learn languages like Spanish.
- What goals do you have for the next year? Are you planning an EP/album, a tour, or something else entirely?
My future plans include more music, singles, an album, and a tour – all in God’s timing.
Xnow’s journey is just beginning, but his sound already speaks volumes. With heartfelt storytelling, cultural pride, and global ambition, he’s building a legacy that crosses borders.
